Günther was officially named and formed in the late fall of 1998 as a five piece punk/ska outfit with drummer S1 and guitarist Zero being the creators and main core. This arrangement continued until the fall of 2000 when Günther down-sized to only bass, drums and guitar. Rising from the ashes of the misguided punk band, a new sound began to emerge. Lacking vocals, the intricate melodies and punchy rhythms were left to compensate. The Theme From 'D' was written along with Green and the former sound shifted in a new direction. The songs now began to incorporate more textures and dynamics due to the lack of restriciton from vocals.
Among the experimentation with new ideas, Scott Bell, the bassist at the time (not s2) even played guitar briefly before eventually departing Günther in spring 2001. Now in need of a bass player, S1 sold his old bass to his buddy Jeremy and had Zero write out bass lines for him to play at an upcoming show. It was the last Multicultural Center show and S2, their long time friend from the Gearshift and Initial days saw their set, expressing interest in joining the band. Since Jeremy was moving in September they gleefully accepted and the perfect utopian socialist entity was formed. S2's creative and technical skills greatly benefited Günther and their now three story tall wall of sound.
The recording of Covert Bogart Operation Alpha: Limited Edition Single took place almost immediately after. With only 1 week to learn the songs, S2 recorded his eight minute track in one take. This was in hopes of burning copies for a show that night which, in the end, was not successful due to fucking computer shit.
In February 2003, Günther's progress was put on hold due to S1's travels to Asia, but upon his return in July, Zero and S2 had the basic forms of He-Man (By The Power Of GreySkull) and with mounds of suppressed creative energy, it was developed within a week. After a month of solid practicing, recording for the Pandoscopy demo commenced at S2's property in Chestemere. Basic off-the-floor tracks for the demo were recorded but no mixing or production took place until December.
In late August of 2004, Günther commenced recording their debut EP "The Greatest Televised Swordsman I've Seen In Years". They Joined forces with Arran Fisher from The Summerlad to record the four-song endeavour at The New Gallery, an art gallery in downtown Calgary. Guitar and drums were completed there in a span of 3 days and bass was tracked soon after at Rock Developmental Technologies. After a year of mixing and mastering the songs, the final version of the EP is ready for production. The much anticipated CD release is tentatively planned for late August 2005, so keep an eye out for when the big bash will take place.
