Born on the icy banks of the mighty Yukon River, James
Murdoch had no choice but to withstand the grueling and biting conditions
that the great white north had to offer. It was only when he was old
enough to understand the foreign concept of heat, not known by many
Yukoners, that James knew he was destined to one day bask in the warming
glow-of the big stage lights.
At the young age of 14, James packed up his meager possessions, including
his guitar, and struck off, on foot, on a journey that would take him
13½ months through the untamed wilderness, leading him to a place where
his once frostbitten skin would shed its fierce coat, Victoria, BC.
No one really understood why he didn't simply take the bus.
He had a story to tell, and a fresh voice to tell it in. After several
collaborative efforts, including a project with his longtime Yukon cohort,
Stephen Noel (Boy), James felt he was continuing to move in a direction
only he could lead. Crossing the treacherous, yet faintly reminiscent,
snow-capped Rocky Mountains, he found himself in Edmonton, Alberta.
From here James released his debut solo album, Polyphonic, an acclaimed
success, which garnered nominations from the West Coast Music Awards
and "Pop Album of the Year" at the 2002 Prairie Music Awards.
In fall 2004, James signed with Indica/Aquarius Records and released
his first major label album "Between the Lines".
Followed up by extensive touring, James has relentlessly promoted the
record, having crossed Canada 5 times last year alone. His travels brought
him from The Dawson City Music Festival in Yukon, to Festival d'Ete
in Quebec and countless in between. James has shared billings with Hawksley
Workman, Pilate, Sloan and many other well known acts, proving he can
hold his own with the best of them.
And with two videos in rotation at MTV Canada, Much More Music and MusiMax,
as well as radio play across the country, James has become one of the
most talked about singer/songwriters in the country.
Recently, two of James' songs have been added to major Hollywood films
including the upcomming Heather Graham movie, "Cake".
The once un-assuming, small town Northern boy, is now poised to take
on the world.
